In honor of Olmsted 200, Julia Bachrach, author of The City in a Garden: A History of Chicago’s Parks, will lead this walking tour of the Midway Plaisance. This tour will illuminate Olmsted’s plan for the Midway Plaisance as a grand boulevard between Jackson and Washington Park, the site’s transformation into a carnival area for the World’s Fair, and Olmsted’s vision for a canal as its centerpiece after the exposition. Highlights include the site of original 1893 Ferris Wheel and development of the University of Chicago’s early Gothic buildings designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb in the early 1890s and layout of the quadrangles by the Olmsted Brothers a decade later.
