The Olmsted Network is thrilled to announce that Daniela, a sophomore at Newburgh Free Academy-West, is the winner of our first annual art competition. Daniela’s artwork will be featured on the program and tote bag at our upcoming conference in the Hudson River Valley on September 13-15. Her colorful drawing captures the essence of Newburgh’s Downing Park, depicting the Polly and Shelter House alongside its special Olmsted history.
Downing Park was the last collaboration between famed park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the duo responsible for Central Park, Prospect Park, Buffalo’s park system and more. A memorial to mentor and Newburgh native Andrew Jackson Downing, the park was completed in the late 19th century with help from their sons John Charles Olmsted and Downing Vaux. Today, the park faces many challenges but has seen a resurgence of interest thanks to Olmsted’s bicentennial in 2022 and several dedicated community groups. Downing Park will be the focal point of our first conference day.
In addition to having her artwork placed on the conference program and tote bag, Daniela will receive recognition and a $200 cash prize at our 2024 Awards Dinner on Sunday, September 15.
Daniela’s school, Newburgh Free Academy-West, will also be honored that evening as the joint recipient of the 2024 Caroline Loughlin Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes exceptional service on behalf of Olmsted parks, and it will recognize the school, as well as The Garden Club of Orange & Dutchess Counties, for its dedication to the park.
