The Friends of Olmsted-Beil House (FOBH), a proud partner of the Olmsted Network, is inspiring the next generation of landscape architects on Staten Island.
First launched in 2023, their unique classroom program has introduced more than 1,400 students in grades 3 through 5 to the world of landscape design and the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted. During the 2024–2025 school year alone, the program reached approximately 400 students in 16 classes across four Staten Island schools.
At the heart of this effort is Paula Tramontano, a retired educator and dedicated FOBH board member. She created and leads the program, using Olmsted’s life and work as a foundation for students to explore how parks and green spaces are designed, why they matter, and how thoughtful landscapes can shape healthier, more connected communities.
Through engaging lessons and creative activities, students learn core design principles, study real-world examples, and begin to imagine their own parks and public spaces. The results are inspiring— just check out this selection of student artwork reflecting their own visions for nature and community!

To deepen their understanding, students receive the Discover Landscape Architecture brochure, supported by a grant from Phillips 66, which introduces the field and highlights its real-world impact.
“This program shows students how their surroundings are shaped by people who care deeply about community and nature,” said Tramontano. “It opens their eyes to the possibility that they can be part of that work too.”
The program also helps raise awareness of Olmsted-Beil House Park, a somewhat hidden gem on Staten Island. The park, which includes Olmsted’s former farmhouse, is now home to a growing community of volunteers and events organized by the FOBH. As students learn about Olmsted’s legacy, more families and educators are discovering this historic site and its connection to America’s most influential landscape architect.
