Sherwood Park Civic Association
The historic neighborhood of Sherwood Park, located in Richmond’s Northside, was designed in 1892 by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted at the commission of local businessman Lewis Ginter. Conceived as a charming streetcar suburb, it became the only neighborhood in Virginia ever planned by Olmsted. Early promoters celebrated it as “The Home of the Crepe Myrtle,” a nod to the hundreds of crepe myrtles that still line Brookland Parkway, which winds through the heart of the community.
Founded in 1951 in response to a proposed armory within the neighborhood, the Sherwood Park Civic Association has long championed the protection and character of this distinctive landmark. Its name—and many of its street names—pay homage to the enduring legends of Robin Hood, reflecting a community as rich in story as it is in history.
