US Capitol Visitor Center

Olmsted Summer House by James Rosenthal

The Capitol Visitor Center’s mission is “Working together for Congress to inform, involve and inspire every visitor to the United States Capitol.”

The Capitol Visitor Center commemorated Olmsted 200 with guide-led tours of the Capitol Grounds (continuing daily in May, June, September and October) and welcomed the Olmsted Network for a conference, The Olmsteds’ Conservation Legacy. The conference, where historians, curators and activists linked Olmsted’s practice and philosophy to today’s environment, can be found on C-SPAN here.

In addition to onsite tours, the CVC created a virtual tour of the U.S. Capitol Grounds narrated by one of our visitor guides to share the beauty and history of this wonderful space. The link above connects to the tour, recorded discussions, demonstrations and a craft project for young people – all highlighting unique elements of Olmsted’s design.
