About Duke University

Beginning in 1925 and in collaboration with architect Horace Trumbauer, the Olmsted Brothers created a master plan and designed the campus of Duke University. Under the direction of Percival Gallagher, the firm designed both the east and west campus (separated for the Men’s and Women’s colleges), connecting them via the now historic tree-lined Campus Drive. Following the Beaux Arts style used at the University of Chicago (00058), they proposed that “the new college will be of stone and of the Collegiate Gothic Style in the scheme of which the church or chapel will occupy the central feature with a notably tall tower of some architectural pretentions.” (Report of visit by Mr. Gallagher_1925-11-20_LOC-OAR-B-R379_im.2]
