About King-Glover Lands

In 1884 Frederick Law Olmsted and John Charles Olmsted drew plans for the development of a residential subdivision across three properties. Belonging to the Bradley, Glover, and King families, the three owners showed a “willingness to enter into an agreement” that would unite the adjacent lands. The Olmsteds proposed a plan that would connect the three properties through a series of curvilinear roads and drives. The system of roads were designed with the projection that several additional residences would be built alongside the rocky route.

The 27-acre estate in Newport Neck featured “an abundance of varied and very interesting forms of low vegetation”. Taking note of the uneven terrain, Frederick Law Olmsted and John Charles Olmsted envisioned that the “residences will be obtained with a most interesting and agreeable character, having great natural and permanent advantages over those of the older villa districts of Newport for the environment of sea breezes and of ocean harbor scenery.” (FLO & J.C.
