About Lane, G. M.
The Olmsted Brothers consulted on the Lane estate “The Chimneys” starting as it was being developed (1902-1947). In 1902 they detailed specifications for work to be done on the property, detailing necessary grading and maintenance improvements. In 1913 they created a General Plan for the Gardens, featuring a work yard, tennis court, vegetable, terrace, and flower garden. Edward C. Whiting of the Olmsted Firm was invited by the Lane family in 1947 to visit and suggest improvements for the maintenance of the gardens. The Olmsted garden was restored to its original plan by a new owner in the 1990s (plan 00273-207-pt1).
In addition to the records for the project at FLONHS (Olmsted Archives) and Library of Congress (Olmsted Associates Records), detailed digital records can be found at the Smithsonian Online Virtual Archives (https://sova.si.edu/record/AAG.CHM). See Images files from Smithsonian below.
