About Phillips Academy
Frederick Law Olmsted began working on Phillips Academy in 1891 and the work was continued by the Olmsted Brothers over many decades. Located in Andover, MA, the academy occupied only a narrow plot of land, creating design challenges until it expanded in size almost ten years later. Creating a new approach and drive to the dormitories (plan 00176-10) dated 1892, the firm relocated many of the buildings away from the town and further up the property’s hill. They proposed that the academy building be “arranged in three quadrangles, of which the central one would naturally be the first to be completed, followed by the addition of the six buildings to complete the smaller quadrangles in the north and south.” [Olmsted Brothers to Trustees of Phillips Academy_27-03-1903_LOC-OAR-B-00176_im.27]
