Scarboro is one of only two extant suburbs designed by the Olmsted firm in Canada. Scarboro’s curvilinear parkways, natural topography, and rigorously controlled development guidelines represented a departure from the typical railway towns developed in Calgary at the turn of the century. The Scarboro Community Association (SCA) was established in 1934 to ensure a safe, neighborly and vibrant community. Great emphasis was placed on building community by providing social and recreational activities—skating, tennis, bowling, swimming, dancing and more), and connecting people through a variety of activities is still a priority of the SCA today.
