The playground is boring.” This was one of the remarks received from our constituency survey when asked about the state of the Springdale playground in 2022. Needless to say, this sent a strong and profound message to the OLPA board and staff. Children deserve to have an exciting, new and innovative playground to laugh in, play in and enjoy the outdoors. It was also important to ensure that all children, regardless of their physical or mental abilities, would be able to enjoy this new playground and thrive.

The current playground was installed over 20 years ago. Given its current state, it is safe to say that the equipment was well-loved. The playground surface had also begun to deteriorate from years of flooding. It was time for a refresh. However, the playground was not the only improvement needed.

Springdale Park— the most western segment of Olmsted Linear Park— endured failed stormwater infrastructure. Collapsed storm pipes created sink holes near the playground on several occasions, further causing severe flooding. In partnership with the City of Atlanta Parks & Recreation Department, construction commenced on a multi-faceted playground and stormwater infrastructure improvement project last August. Olmsted Linear Park Alliance (OLPA) hired Tunnell & Tunnell Landscape Architecture to manage and oversee the entire project. The first phase of improvements includes the removal of antiquated stormwater structures and the installation of new stormwater pipes around and underneath the playground. Once this work is complete, the new playground will be installed. The play equipment will include a nest swing, a climbing sphere and musical flowers, and the beloved spinning saucer will receive a new surface and be reinstalled. There will also be new landscaping.

Of course, this project would not be possible without our generous donors, partners and stakeholders. OLPA wants to extend our sincere appreciation to those who helped launch this project. We received foundation grants from Park Pride Atlanta, The Waterfall Foundation and the David, Helen and Marian Woodward Fund. Additional funding was received from the City of Atlanta Parks & Recreation Department, Atlanta City Council Member Alex Wan and Former Atlanta Council Member Jennifer Ide.

Upon completion, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled, and we welcome all to attend to celebrate the unveiling of the new playground.
