About Bolcom, H. S.
J.F. Dawson designed a preliminary plan for Bolcoms’ property in The Highlands, siting the house east-west with a large veranda for views across the Sound. Dawson also designed grading, retaining walls, pathways, and general picturesque plantings. Dawson advised Bolcom’s architect, Charles Bebb, to design the house as “Hillside Italian” with prominent horizontal lines. Bolcom Mills Inc. faced hardship during WWI and it is unclear how much they developed their property according to the Olmsted plan.
