In his 1908 report, J.C. Olmsted endorsed Clark's goals of incorporating the beauty of the natural woods on his property, but expressed concern about the amount of understory clearing Lancaster's men were undertaking. When planting plans with a formal garden were sent, Clark wrote that he wanted "the wildness of the woods" as the setting since he did not have a wife to enjoy a formal garden.
