Frederick, D. E.

The Frederick Estate is one of the best known and thoroughly planned of the Olmsted firm’s residential designs in the Pacific NW. D.E. Frederick and his wife built two houses on the site and consulted Olmsted Brothers on broad concepts and small details from 1913-1939.

Architect for the first cottage was W. Marbury Somervell and Lester P. Hobart designed the second home. John C. Olmsted, James F. Dawson, and many other Olmsted staff participated in the planning or drafting.

Garden furniture and other landscape details for the later design reflect the French influence of the house. The large formal gardens are typical of James F. Dawson’s long interest in horticulture. The picturesque pools in the ravine were designed and constructed to simulate a natural condition.
