About Merrill, R. D.
James Frederick Dawson produced preliminary and detailed plans, grading studies, sketches and multiple revisions for timber baron R.D. Merrill’s Highlands estate. Merrill wrote, “Mrs Merrill and I have looked over your plans and are much pleased with them” but the project remained unbuilt. The design featured a dramatic initial view to the house from the road above, aligning with a sweeping view axis on the opposite side. The formal forecourt, parterre garden and “grand allee” contrasted with the forested approach drive and softly defined lawns facing Puget Sound.
