Frederick Law Olmsted Jr.’s California estate remains a tangible reminder of the Olmsted Brothers’ deep-rooted connection to Palos Verdes. As part of the 1922 agreement for the planning of Palos Verdes Estates, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. was required to live in the suburban community while it was under construction.
Completed in 1924, his Spanish-inspired home was designed by American architect Myron Hunt. The 65,000-square-foot property featured panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to the west, along with an English-style garden and orchard on the eastern side of the property. Exterior walls were clad in local Palos Verdes stone to link the site to the natural environment.
Due to its positioning on a coastal bluff, the property has faced issues of earthquake damage and cliff erosion, but stabilization efforts have helped preserve the property. The house was previously owned by American artist Taiana von Fürstenberg until its sale in 2023.
