Throughout 2022, Olmsted 200 has been tracking the ways people are celebrating Frederick Law Olmsted’s bicentennial. From Olmsted-inspired painting and music compositions to record-breaking events held in his honor, FLO fans have been treated to a plethora of unique opportunities across the county. To add to the list, Olmsted will be honored by two street namings this year!

Olmsted 200 is proud to share that Frederick Law Olmsted is now an honorary member of the Association of University Architects. At the association’s recent meeting, attendees voted to approve FLO’s admission to the exclusive group, noting his significant contributions to campus planning and his “democratic impulses” in higher education.

On April 26, 2022, we celebrated the 200th anniversary of Frederick Law Olmsted's birth— and what a day it was! From the outpouring of social media shoutouts to the hundreds of birthday parties and lectures held across the country, this birthday was truly one for the books.

T-minus 11 days until FLO’s 200th! The day we’ve been waiting for is almost here, and we couldn’t be more excited to reflect on Olmsted’s living legacy and usher in the next 200 years of parks for all people.

In just over a month— on April 26, 2022— people across the country will celebrate the 200th birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted. Author, journalist, public official, city planner and father of American landscape architecture, Olmsted has been called by biographer Justin Martin "the most important historical figure the average American knows least amount."

Olmsted 200’s theme of “Parks for All People” is an important lens to use as we think about both the past and the future.

2022 is here — and so is the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted! Olmsted 200 invites you to ring in the Year of Olmsted with a deep dive into our website.

As we approach the holidays, and welcome the new year as the pinnacle of our celebration, the Olmsted 200 team can’t help but feel a sense of pride at how far we’ve come since our launch in early 2021.

We can never take our parks and public spaces for granted. In recent months, communities have benefitted in myriad ways from access to parks, outdoor spaces, and public lands that promote healthful recreation and respite.

As we celebrate the many accomplishments of Frederick Law Olmsted, Olmsted 200 also examines how his values and principles can help address challenges facing public parks today. For his time, Olmsted espoused some fairly radical perspectives — believing that parks belonged to all people and contributed to public health and well-being. More than 100 years later, his dynamic ideas about democratic spaces live on.
