Big Head Fred with Reclining Liberty in Morningside Park in NYC

In anticipation of Frederick Law Olmsted’s 201st birthday, Big Head Fred has been back on the road to visit partners and meet adoring fans.

The 7-foot tall caricature of FLO was born from the combined talents of illustrator David Lee Csicsko and puppet-maker Randy Carfagno for Olmsted 200. Csicsko designed the original 2D illustration, and Carfagno adapted the drawing into one of his signature creations.

Big Head Fred made his debut almost a year ago at the Olmsted Birthday Gala in Central Park, meeting familiar faces like Olmsted 200 Honorary Committee Chair Laurie Olin, Olmsted scholar Charles Beveridge, and Martha Stewart.

Since April, Big Head Fred has visited New York City, Chicago, Riverside, San Francisco, and more. Recently, he joined landscape architecture professors and students at Kansas State University for LABash before making his way to Rochester for a birthday celebration this past weekend with the Highland Park Conservancy. Big Head Fred is currently in Hartford, awaiting birthday appearances at Trinity College and the Connecticut State Capitol. This is a special trip for Big Head Fred because Olmsted was born and buried in the city.

In the future, Big Head Fred plans to visit Louisville and Atlanta. Want to get on the schedule? If you’d like to request Big Head Fred for an event in your city, please reach out to us at info@olmsted.org for more information.
