April 26, 2022 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted, social reformer and founder of American landscape architecture— but the celebration isn’t over! Olmsted 200 will be honoring FLO all year long.

After a successful birthday party in New York City on April 25, NAOP is excited to head to the Midwest for another gala dinner. On June 17 from 6 to 9 pm CT, we’ll be at the iconic Glessner House in Chicago. The house was designed by Olmsted friend and neighbor Henry Hobson Richardson, and it is where Olmsted stayed while designing the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. A house tour will be part of the special evening. Tickets are available here until midnight on June 13. If you have already secured tickets, please watch your email and check the registration page for the latest on COVID-19 restrictions, dress code, and more. Photos from the event will be available here:

Whether you are attending the gala dinner or simply visiting Chicago for the weekend, we encourage you to take advantage of other programs intended to #CelebrateOlmsted.

On the morning of June 18, please join us for a carillon concert at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The concert will consist of the winning pieces from our Inspired by Olmsted composition contest. Olmsted 200 will have a table set up outside the chapel, and we will have panels of our exhibit– Frederick Law Olmsted: Landscapes for the Public Good— on display. A reception will follow in Ida Noyes Hall, and all Olmsted 200 attendees should wear their Olmsted 200 pins.

At noon, we’ll board a tour bus for Tours of Olmsted Parks with Julia Bachrach, award-winning author, historian, preservationist, and urban planner. This tour will take us to the Wooded Island and Japanese Garden; Jackson Park; Washington Park; Garfield Boulevard; Sherman Park; and possibly Cornell Park. A box lunch will also be provided. The bus will return everyone to Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.

To register for the carillon concert and the bus tour, please visit our gala registration page here and select the “Carillon Concert & Tour of Olmsted Parks” ticket for $125.
Additionally, there are many other events happening across the Midwest this year. All programs are listed on our website calendar, but for your convenience, we have created a document highlighting the numerous events occurring in Chicago and the Midwest.
