Throughout 2022, Olmsted 200 has been tracking the ways people are celebrating Frederick Law Olmsted’s bicentennial. From Olmsted-inspired painting and music compositions to record-breaking events held in his honor, FLO fans have been treated to a plethora of unique opportunities across the county. To add to the list, Olmsted will be honored by two street namings this year!
First up, in Staten Island, New York, Frederick Law Olmsted Way will be unveiled on Friday, August 26. The public is invited to join New York City Councilman Joseph Borelli and the Friends of Olmsted-Beil House for a ceremony celebrating the co-naming of Woods of Arden Road to Frederick Law Olmsted Way. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at Olmsted-Beil House Park. Learn more here.
Additionally, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the County Board of Supervisors recently adopted a resolution introduced by Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson and Supervisor Pete Burgelis to name a street in Washington Park Olmsted Way.
“Frederick Law Olmsted’s impact on Milwaukee deserves to be celebrated,” said Chairwoman Nicholson via Urban Milwaukee. “From Lake and Riverside parks on the east side to one of my personal favorites, Washington Park, Olmsted has shaped how people have enjoyed public spaces in Milwaukee for more than 130 years and will continue to shape how we enjoy it for the next 100. I look forward to seeing his contributions celebrated through this parkway to ensure we remember this history.”
The National Association for Olmsted Parks, which is the managing partner of Olmsted 200, presented testimony on the issue saying, “This is an honor for Olmsted, but it is also an important step in recognizing the remarkable assets that Milwaukee has not only in Washington Park but in all of its Olmsted Parks.”
Frederick Law Olmsted Way in Staten Island and Olmsted Way in Milwaukee join a growing list of streets already named in honor of Olmsted. These streets include Frederick Law Olmsted Way in Asheville, NC; Olmsted Road in North Riverside, IL; and Olmsted Road in Monterey, CA.
