Eugénie L. Birch FAICP, FAcSS, RTPI (hon), is the Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research, Department of City and Regional Planning, and Graduate Dean, Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania. She is the founding co-director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research, dedicated to integrative research and instruction in sustainable urban development. She is co-editor, University of Pennsylvania Press’s City in the 21st Century series and co-editor, SSRN Urban Research e-journal. She is currently engaged in two long-term research initiatives within Penn IUR focusing on city climate-resilient infrastructure finance and urban informality, and a third with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), defining and financing urban nature-based solutions.
Birch, who is a member of the SDSN Leadership Council and member of the Board of Directors, Regional Plan Association, holds a PhD and Masters degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University. She is a former board member of the National Association for Olmsted Parks and served on the Olmsted 200 Honorary Committee.
