Join us to celebrate Connecticut’s Historic Gardens Day 2023! Tour our historic Jacob Weidenmann-designed garden, installed by Eliza Butler McCook and her sister Mary Sheldon in 1865.

This year we also celebrate the Hartford roots of renowned landscape architect and native son, Frederick Law Olmsted, born in the neighborhood of the Butler-McCook House, through the presentation of two exhibits to celebrate Olmsted200.

An outdoor exhibit, distributed by the National Association for Olmsted Parks, was curated by Dr. Caroline Mesrobian Hickman of the University of Maryland in conjunction with the Oak Spring Garden Foundation and summarizes highlights in the history of American landscape architecture, as well as the evolution of American municipal, state and national park systems.

A second exhibit, on view in our Main Street History Center, was arranged by Barbara Yeager, with support from the Connecticut Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and features unique Connecticut landscapes designed by Olmsted.
